Solar Incentives in the Carolinas

We all know money doesn’t grow on trees, but as some people already know, it is starting to grow on roofs.

Solar incentives are making it all the more lucrative to homeowners to install a solar system on their home.

A new solar incentives program starting on January 1 will give customers who install power-producing panels upfront rebates of $1,000/kW of capacity and monthly bill credits of $4.50/kW coming from photovoltaics.

The deal is for Carolina residential customers and applies to new installations that can generate between 2 and 10 kilowatts.

Solar Sales Training at US Vets Inc. “Hire a Hero” Job Fair

This past Wednesday we had the opportunity to participate in the US Vets Inc.’s annual “Honor a Hero, Hire a Vet” career expo and resource fair in Los Angeles. We were happy to have a booth set up to display our solar sales training course, informing our veterans of the opportunities to start a career in solar sales.

In order to show our appreciation for what our veterans have done for the country, we even hosted a free drawing to give away a free solar sales training course. We will be drawing the lucky winner this Monday.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also made a special appearance at the expo, and even stopped by Rich Hessler’s Solar Sales Training booth to say hello.

Solar Market in US is Growing

Solar business and the solar job market in the US is growing steadily, with at least a 144% increase in installed solar capacity over last year.

So it only makes sense that the solar job market is improving, too. It is expected that solar jobs will increase 26% in the next year, adding 24,000 new jobs by next August.

Support for solar development is overwhelming: 94% of Americans support the use of solar energy, and 80% of those people support the reallocation of federal subsidies from fossil fuel to renewable energy industries.

Solar Business is Sizzling

Solar business is sizzling thanks in part to the incentives of going solar.

A family in Ohio decided to go solar two years ago, dedicating themselves to helping the environment.

But over the course of two years—and thanks to energy tax credits—their energy pays for itself. They are even able to sell the electricity they don’t use.

Homeowners can expect the break-even point for residential solar installation to be about 8-12 years, while businesses can expect only about three years because of the depreciation of their taxes.

Solar Incentives Rate

Solar incentives are one reason why many people wait to go solar, hoping the incentives will get better with time.

Solar incentive programs, however, are uneven and at risk of coming to a halt. We face looming deadlines for the expiration of some key solar incentives, and other programs—such as loan guarantee support—are being reduced by Congress.

Solar Energy Embraced by Public Schools

Solar energy is being embraced by home and business owners. Also embracing the financial and environmental benefits, entire school districts are on the brink of incorporating solar energy.

Solar energy is under development in the Green Valley and Gila Bend School Districts in Arizona. The solar technology will be used to teach students about solar energy.

Solar Energy Conference Held in Valencia, Spain

The Spanish city of Valencia hosts the 25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition this week.

The event will look at new trends in the industry and aims to be a center for information exchange and dialogue over a range of scientific and technical solar energy issues, covering all areas of the field from research and development down through the incorporation of solar energy in buildings and its practical use.

There will also be workshops, lectures, presentations and exhibitions. Around 900 companies from all fields of the photovoltaic solar energy industry will attend along with 4,500 delegates, while the exhibition is expected to attract a total of around 40,000 visitors to the city.

Solar Power Moves Ahead in California

Solar power continues to expand its presence as the California Commission gave the go-ahead for a 250-megawatt solar-thermal project.

 

The Beacon Solar Energy project will rely on rows of curved mirrors that will collect solar power from the sun and heat tubes filled with fluid to help run a steam turbine generator.

 

It appealed for the most part to environmentalists who frown upon solar power projects that ruin pristine habitats because the 2,012-acre site sits on land previously used for farming.

 

Developer NextEra Energy Resources further appeased environmentalists with its decision to use recycled municipal water rather than groundwater for the roughly 456 million gallons needed annually for the plant's wet-cooling process.

 

The race for solar projects in California comes as the state's three investor-owned utilities face a deadline to obtain 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2010, also when federal incentives for such renewable projects are set to expire.

 

The Blythe Solar Power Project in southeast California -- expected to produce 1,000 megawatts -- is just one of several projects in the state that BLM has tagged on its "fast-track" permitting schedule in an effort to meet the year-end deadline for federal incentives. Commercial solar power continues to boom with a new master services agreement between Envision Solar International and Morrow-Meadows Corporation, a full-service contracting company with operations along the West Coast. The MSA will enable the companies to accelerate the execution of commercial solar projects such as solar/electric vehicle charging stations under work orders for their expanding pipeline of clean and renewable energy projects with commercial, institutional, and utility customers. Envision is pleased to announce the execution of the first commercial solar power work order under the MSA and has commenced design and deployment of a 300kW Park Solar project in Arizona, which will be completed in the third quarter of this year. Distributed Sun’s commercial solar power installation at the Hilton Hotel BWI Airport in Maryland was commissioned month. The commercial solar power installation is owned by Distributed Sun's Solar Energy Investment Company (SEIC). KB Homes and China's BYD showcase affordable solar homes development

California-based KB Homes and Chinese solar firm, BYD, have partnered to develop affordable solar homes in Lancaster.  

BYD Co. is known for producing plug-in cars, solar equipment, and batteries.  Now they have entered the renewable energy-real estate industry.  Combining powers with KB Homes has allowed for traditionally off-grid solar technologies to be introduced into a densely grid-tied residential area.

These modestly priced homes will be pre-equipped with solar modules and lithium-ion battery storage systems.  Normally, this technology is used in off-grid properties, but KB Homes and BYD hope that this new development will help pave the way for new impressions on residential solar energy and plug-in vehicles.

As opposed to traditional lead-acid batteries in off-grid electric systems, the lithium-ion battery storage systems will be located in the garage in dark, sleek housing units that flash led lights communicating performance levels.  They will be capable of storing up to 16 kWh of electricity.  The average Southern California household usually uses about 20kWh of electrcicity per day.  These lithium-ion ferrous phosphate batteries are the same that are used in BYD's plug-in electric vehicles which they will premiere later this year in Los Angeles.

Executive VP of KB Homes in Southern California, Thomas DiPrima, explained their goal was to first provide the solar panel-battery combo to the model home and four other production homes at no upfront cost to the homeowners.  The package would then bec ome optional to other homes in the West Lancaster subdivision and others.  These homes have starting prices from $210,000 to $257,000.

"Our long-term goal is to get to where we can do this nationwide," said Mr. DiPrima. "Our hope and our goal is to make it so affordable that it can be offered in a new home as a standard feature."

US Solar Market Grows Despite Difficult Economic Conditions

Despite the global economic downturn, the solar market in the United States grew by 36% in 2009. To date, the United States is the third largest photovoltaic market in the world (behind #1 Germany and #2 Spain). 

The solar market is undergoing constant changes. Also the idea of photovoltaics has been around for over a century, only recently has it become mainstream. In 2009, changes include new companies entering the market, lower-cost panels, and changes in incentives and regulation. Solar companies need to be on top of these changes in order to remain competitive.

California leads the United States in solar installations. It has 53% stake of photovoltaic output. Most of the growth in 2009 came from utility and residential solar installations. Price cuts with minimal declines in incentives provided incentives to homeowners to install solar. In addition, new programs, such as the Pennsylvania Sunshine Solar Program, provided incentive for new companies to enter the solar playing field.

With so many states offering incentives to install solar, the United States is able to keep funding sources relatively disperse. This means that the United States solar market does not have the same risk as the national policies of Germany or Spain.

In addition, 16 states have enacted a Renewable Portfolio Standard. The Renewable Portfolio Standard gives the source of electricity production and requires a set amount of electricity production from renewable sources. Part of this standard is solar electricity production. 

In the next 5 years, the solar market is projected to grow to 4.5-5.5 gigaWatts. One gigaWatt is enough electricity for 70,000 homes. This is 10 times the size of the current solar market. With market growth like this, it is extremely tempting to enter the lucrative (and growing) solar market.

Core Steps of the PV Sales Process

A core competency is an essential piece of the advanced pv sales process that impact success. All of these sales pieces are measurable, controllable, and trainable. Unfortunately, many pv solar sales organizations do not utilize these techniques.

Without a foundation of essential sales elements or pv advanced sales training, organizations have a difficult time closing deals. By working through each of the items of the sales cycle, solar companies can strengthen their sales team.

The most important task is to determine which activities are directly linked to revenue. Revenue is the way success is measured in sales. With this in mind, it is easier to determine what is and is not an essential component to sales. 

The sales process begins with lead generation. This includes lead referral programs, vendor collaboration programs (lead exchange), informational seminars, and other programs.

Once a company has a lead, it needs to be converted into an appointment. The Lead-to-Appointment ratio is an important indicator on the quality of the leads. A quality lead will turn into a sale while a poor quality lead will waste sales representatives’ time. 

The next step is for the salesperson to achieve the next step objective. Measuring this step will give the company information about the effectiveness of the salesperson. Finally, the salesperson needs to close the pv solar system to deliver the most important metric, a paycheck.

DWP Solar Finance Would Increase Solar and Create Jobs in California

The Los Angeles Business Council promises excellent jobs and 600 MW of electricity if the city can institute a solar finance program. The proposed solar finance program would be funded by the Department of Water and Power. It would allow Los Angeles to create 3% of its electricity from the sun and attract solar companies to the area to create jobs.

The program, which has been implemented in Florida and Germany, is already a success. It will encourage business owners and homeowners to install solar on their homes and commercial buildings.

All excess electricity generated can be sold back to the utility company at a set rate for the next 20 years.

Solar has already created 4,300 local jobs, but investment by the city of Los Angeles through solar financing would further propel the solar industry.

The program will be paid by the Department of Water and Power. It is estimated that the program will cost $35 million a year from its $4 billion budget. Already, the budget includes $800 million for renewable energy programs. By teaming up property owners, Los Angeles can deploy solar with this robust finance program.

Creative Solar Finance Options

The United States Recovery Act has been bolstering up solar after the 2008 market slide (due to the world-wide recession). This is partially due to new solar financing options.

Advanced Green Technologies is working hard to put solar panels in with business owners. They are offering a 0-0-3 program, no down payment and interest free for 3 months. This would allow business owners to purchase a solar system, take advantage of tax credits, and pay down the loan before interest payments begin.

Tennessee Valley AUthority proposed adding nuclear reactors, but it is warming up to solar. It created a program, TVA's Generation Partners program, which will provide a $1,000 incentive for small solar projects. It has also guaranteed a price for buying excess electricity.

California started it's PACE program, allowing homeowners to pay back the city for a solar installation through property taxes.

When homeowners meet specific criteria, solar can be added to a mortgage during a refinance. This will decrease interest rates and increase the return on investment (ROI) of a solar system. 

Solar finance are starting to pop up all over the United States to encourage deployment of photovoltaics. Solar panels provide renewable, reliable electricity with no emissions after production and no moving parts. They have a 20-30 year electricity production warranty (and will continue to produce electricity for decades after that).

With these types of programs, it is inevitable that the price of solar will continue to decrease as demand for cheaper renewable energy grows stronger every year.

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) is planning to spend $100 million to help SunRun, a San Francisco solar company, to finance solar panel installations.

SunRun will use the money from PGE to fund more than 3,500 residential solar installations across multiple states. Unlike many solar companies, SunRun pays for solar installations up front and continues to own the system afterward. They sell the electricity produced by the solar system to the property owner.

Customer payments are split between SunRun and PGE. PGE will receive the federal tax credit for the solar installation.

Banks used to provide solar financing, but this has slowed down since the credit crisis of 2008. 

This is not the first time PGE has made this sort of agreement. Earlier this year, it agreed to make a $60 million deal with SolarCity.

SunRun plans to install solar systems in California, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. This will create jobs as the solar systems require installation and maintenance.

What are the solar industry projections for the great solar boom in the climate-energy era? As the country begins climbing out of recession, it is going to require increasing public acceptance of solar energy to get the economic engine fired up.

Solar industry projections provide that the uneven supply and demand ratio characteristic of 2009 will be balanced out this year due to strong demand in the Asian and U.S. markets.  These markets will help increase the global solar usage to 9.3 GW in 2010.  This would translate into a market value of U.S. $39 billion.

Decreasing prices in solar equipment and materials should open up new markets allowing for the industry to reach a United States $77 billion value with 26.4 GW of capacity in 2015.

A huge role in the growth of the solar market will be the demand for solar technology in China.  Currently, China is the largest single manufacturer of solar products in the world but not a huge buyer of them.  China will have to deploy solar technology as they have a significant impact on global warming and the energy crisis.  According to most solar industry projections, China will be the largest solar market in the world in 2015.

Supply and demand will only be restored to its equilibrium once the market experiences some company failures and lowered utility rates.

Ted Sullivan, senior analyst at Lux Research and author of the new report "Solar's Shakeout: Europe Loses Leadership as China Rises", cites that solar installations will rise at an annual rate of 23% between 2010 and 2015.  Yet, revenue will only grow annually by 14% due to falling solar equipment prices.

With the projection of 26.5 GW of solar deployed in the United States in 5 years (currently just over 1 GW), there is plenty of room for expansion in the solar industry. As energy prices rise in the future, demand for solar will increase dramatically, creating jobs increasing revenue of strong solar companies.

Inverters and Their Role in Renewable Energy

Inverters may be the one piece of electrical equipment that most solar energy users do not know much about.  They are very discrete, unobtrusive boxes that convert direct current (DC), in this case from solar panels, to alternating current (AC) for practical use.  With the use of proper transformers, switching, and circuit controls, AC can be converted to any voltage and frequency.

Apart from solar panels, inverters are also used to transmit power from batteries and fuel cells.

Most property owners using solar electricity use grid tie inverters.  These inverters are capable of feeding back energy into the utility grid because it produces alternating current with the amplitude and frequency as the energy provided by the utility distribution network.  These are quite useful as they can shut off in the event of a blackout.

Micro-inverters are used to convert direct current from individual solar panels into alternating curre nt solely for feeding it into the utility grid.

A commercial generator or uninterruptible power supply uses a battery and an inverter to store alternating current for a main power distribution outage.  Once main power is restored, a rectifier is used to supply direct current electricity for recharging the battery.

Though inverters are frequently unnoticed when admiring a solar system, there role is what makes any solar energy generation project possible. 

According to a new report from Yole Developpement, a French industry analysis firm, the growing photovoltaic market has resulted in a multi-billion euro market for European inverter manufacturers.  The photovoltaic inverter market is expected to double in value during the coming years.  Analysts project the industry to be worth an estimated $8.1 billion by 2014.

Apart from TXU partnering with various solar companies to lease solar panel systems to homeowners, Texas provides other incentives for businesses and homeowners involved in renewable energy technologies.

Texas incentives allow for companies and other organization subject to their franchise tax to deduct 10% of the total cost of a solar energy system from the franchise tax.  

Another of Texas' incentives includes corporations involved in the manufacturing, selling, and installation of solar energy devices to be exempt from the state franchise tax.  This exemption is significantly beneficial to manufacturers as there is no ceiling on the exemption.

According to Texas' solar incentives program, the franchise tax is equivalent to the corporate t ax.

A solar energy device is defined as a system or series of mechanisms designed primarily to provide heating or cooling or to produce electrical or mechanical power by collecting and transferring solar-generated energy. The term includes a mechanical or chemical device that has the ability to store solar-generated energy for use in heating or cooling or in the production of power.  Wind energy technologies are also eligible for the franchise tax deduction and exemption.

Texas incentives also allow for the property tax exemption of the appraised value of a property as a result of any installation or construction of either a solar or wind-powered energy device meant to produce and distribute thermal, mechanical, or electrical energy for on-site use or for a device that is used to store that energy.

To apply for this incentive, one must fill Form 50-123, "Exemption Application for Solar or Wind-powered Energy Devices".

With many states offering great solar rebates and incentives, it is time for the federal government to strongly encourage the use of renewable energy. In his national address on Tuesday, the President declared one of his next goals is to push clean energy in the United States. This is in response to the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the fact that the United States is spending billions every year on foreign energy. The President want more of our consumed energy to come from national, clean energy sources.
